Xiaomi is holding a big event in China today, where it is most likely unveiling the Mi 5. Alongside the Mi 5, the company is also expected to unveil the Mi 5 Plus smartphone as well. The two smartphones are pegged to be priced starting 2,399 Yuan (Rs 24,500 approximately) and 3,000 Yuan (Rs 30,700 approximately) respectively.
The Mi 5 and Mi 5 Plus have been anticipated since quite a while, and therefore leaks surrounding them have been generous. According to previous rumors, the Mi 5 will come with a 5.2-inch 2K LCD display and a Snapdragon 820 chipset paired with 4GB RAM. It will come in 16/64GB variants, and integrate a fingerprint scanner in the home button.
On the camera front, it is said to sport a 16-megapixel rear camera along with a 13-megpixel front-facing camera. The Mi 5 will run on the company’s new MIUI 7 (most likely based on Android 5.1 Lollipop), and pack a 3,000mAh battery which will have fast charging abilities. It will charge up to 30 percent in five minutes and up to 100 percent in 40 minutes.
In the online invitation, the company teased a super-thin profile of the Mi 5 with curved corners and a metal frame. Yesterday, Xiaomi released a teaser on Facebook showing what seemed like a wireless charger attached to a micro-USB port. It is one of the clearest signs that the Mi 5 will be the first smartphone in the company’s lineup to boast wireless charging capabilities. Wireless charging would be a significant highlight for Xiaomi, as it is something Samsung has used in its battle against the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.
Coming to the Mi 5 Plus, it is expected to feature a bigger 5.7-inch 2K display along with a full-metal body, Snapdragon 820 processor, 23-megapixel rear camera, 12-megapixel front camera, and a 3,500mAh battery. Like the Mi 5, this variant too is expected to feature a fingerprint scanner.
