The CEOs of global software major Oracle and search engine giant Google failed to reach a deal to end their copyright lawsuit over software copyrights infringement, a media report said. Oracle CEO Safra Catz and Google’s chief executive Sundar Pichai attended the talks in a court for six hours on Friday and discussed the lawsuit that Oracle filed seeking $9.3 billion in damages from Google for use of Java in Android,computerworld.com reported, citing IDG News Service.

“After an earlier run at settling this case failed, the court observed that some cases just need to be tried. This case apparently needs to be tried twice,” Magistrate Judge Paul Singh Grewal, who mediated the talks, was quoted as saying.

Oracle claims that it should receive $475 million in damages in addition to $8.8 billion relating to “profits apportioned to infringed Java copyrights”.  It accused Google of illegally copying a key part of the Java platform into its Android operating system, making billions in profit for Google and crushing Java’s chance of success in smartphones, tablets and other products.

As reported earlier this month, Netflix is finally here in India. The online video on demand service is offering Indian users three plans to choose from, with prices starting from Rs 500 per month.

The aforementioned three plans are called Basic, Standard and Premium, priced at Rs 500, Rs 650 and Rs 800 per month respectively. Users opting for Netflix will be first entitled to a free one month trial, post which they will have to pay to continue using the service.

In the Basic plan, there is no HD available, and a video can only be watched on a single screen at one time. Nonetheless, Basic plan users will be entailed to unlimited access to movies and TV shows, and they can watch them on a TV, laptop, smartphone or a tablet.

Users opting for the Standard plan will get access to HD prints and will be able to watch shows on two screens simultaneously. Premium plan, on the other hand, gives users access to Ultra HD prints and lets users watch shows or movies on up to four screens simultaneously. As mentioned above, no matter the plan one chooses, you will get the first month free, and will be able to cancel the subscription at any time.

Public sector telecom major BSNL today said it is working on setting up 40,000 Wi-Fi hotspots in the country to counter its inadequacy in providing 4G data services.

“We are at present neither a 4G service provider, nor do we have the relevant spectrum to launch this service. But to deal with this challenge, we are working on a scheme to set up 40,000 Wi-Fi Hotspots in the country, as it (Wi-Fi Hotspot) is faster than 4G services,” BSNL CMD Anupam Shrivastava told reporters.

Shrivastava said under the scheme, 500 Wi-Fi hotspots have been set up in the country, and the company plans to increase them to 2,500 in the current financial year. He apprised that in order to improve its telecom service, the BSNL would be setting up around 25,000 mobile towers in the country, with an investment of Rs 5,500 crore.

On the issue of call drops, he said the problem is aggravated due to people’s misconception that the radiation emitted by the mobile towers has an adverse effect on their health, owing to which many such towers have been removed from residential areas. The BSNL CMD further said that in FY15, the company achieved an operating profit of Rs 672 crore, and expects it to reach Rs 1,000 crore by the end of the current fiscal year.

He said, “We are not just satisfied by increasing our operating profit, but we are also working on taking the company to a net profit position. We expect to reach that position by FY19.”
