HTC has launched a number of new phones lately, from the entry level Desire 210 to the top-spec HTC One (M8), and reports about the new HTC One Mini 2  have started pouring in too. But amidst all this, the Taiwanese phone maker has found another way to reduce manufacturing costs, and that’s by outsourcing production.

HTC has started to outsource some of its midrange Desire devices to contract manufacturers Compal Electronics in Taiwan, and Wingtech Group in China, The Wall Street Journal reports. While Compal has been a supplier to Nokia, the latter handles Chinese brands like Xiaomi and also manufactures the recently launched HTC Desire 210.

The move to adopt outsourcing by HTC, a brand that has kept production in-house till now, is a clear indication of its plans to increase foothold in the developing markets. In an earlier interview with WSJ, HTC’s Chialin Chang had mentioned that while the possibility of outsourcing production was being considered, the high end devices from the HTC One range, and Desire 816 would be manufactured by HTC only.

Apart from outsourcing manufacturing, HTC has also started using chipsets from MediaTek among other vendors to reduce costs from the more expensive Qualcomm silicon.
