Twitter teases new features like native video sharing and editing, personalized timeline highlights, and improved DMs
Twitter wants its existing users to stick with the microblogging
platform while making the service easier for new users to settle in.
To ensure this, the company plans on releasing an update next week which will bring better and personalized content to its users. On top of that, it will also be adding features like native video shooting and editing, filters for surfacing relevant tweets, and an improvement to direct messaging in future updates, the company announced in a blog post. Twitter wants to make the service easier so that new users can quickly feel at home on the platform. For that it will be introducing ready-made timeline, which will populate a new user’s timeline with tweets based on his or her interests. The company is also creating a “snapshot” for users which will highlight the most important stories.
One of the more interesting additions will be “Instant Timeline,” which will cater users with interesting content from people they don’t even follow. The company also plans to introduce a feature called “While You Were Away,” which will show users all the interesting tweets they missed while they were away. It promises that “every time you open the Twitter app, you’ll see something great.”
The microblogging social network is also enhancing the existing messaging features by giving users the ability to send tweets in Direct Messages. The intention is to encourage users to engage in private conversations. Another engaging feature will circle around the location. The company wants to make better use of location, and it is likely to show you more tweets from your nearby places, including events and other things that are taking place in one’s vicinity.
Earlier this year, the company released the ability to natively embed GIFs and other videos to the timeline, and now it will let users edit and post videos from within the app. The company already has Vine app for sharing short videos, but the new feature will allow users to do all things without leaving the Twitter app. The move can help the company compete directly with Facebook’s Instagram which allows video editing and sharing features.
CEO Dick Costolo also announced that the company will invest in new apps. Twitter is following Facebook and other major services’ footsteps that have invested in other apps and evidently continued to gain users.
