It’s no secret that Samsung is working on a new smartwatch codenamed ‘Orbis’According to SamMobile, the forthcoming smartwatch will be called Gear A, and might turn out to be one of the most premium smartwatches in its lineup. The publication claims that the Samsung Gear A will be launched in two variants, one with Bluetooth connectivity and another one with 3G and voice calling support. The Gear A will also support Wi-Fi and cellular connectivity. Samsung is also said to be employing a generous measure of metal in the construction to up its premium factor.
From what we have heard so far, the Gear will feature a rotating bezel ring, which will be used for navigating through menus. Other functions for the ring are expected to include scrolling through recent apps, going through widgets, and notifications among others. Users will also be able to dismiss or snooze alarms, skip music tracks, accept or reject calls, and end active calls. It will also be the first smartwatch in the company’s portfolio to feature wireless charging.
The publication has also obtained the model numbers for the Gear A for multiple carriers and models. The SM-R730 will be the one supporting 3G and will be primarily sold through the carriers. The SM-732 might be meant for South Korean carriers.
Samsung seems to be gearing up to take on the Apple Watch, which goes on sale on April 10. We wouldn’t be surprised to see a complete shift in design philosophies and the features per se especially after considering the drastic changes that heralded with the Samsung Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 Edge.
